For me it is often in the form of music, but it also sneaks up on me when I least expect it in different places. As the snow melts in Jackson town and everything turns to muck, I surprisingly caught myself today smiling at the sight of a very craptastic looking butte in town. But it wasn't the butte - it was the deer hanging out, blending almost perfectly with the mountain and walking oh so close to the highway. But they were very aware, and they were beautiful. Something beautiful against something drab. That is worth some insipiration.

And earlier tonight I was inspired in a much different way while watching a news anchor lose his shiz for a good ten minutes on his audience. But I couldn't turn away or change the channel. I wanted to turn it up! It was a great inspiration for me as I thought, "dear lord, never let yourself go that crazy bananas...in public." You ask - why was he losing his shiz? The government. What else? And no, it was not Fox News (which I also enjoy watching for the crazy, shiz losing anchors).

But back to music inspiration...this week I discovered that one of my favorite songwriters is coming out with a new album in June. And the lead track has been bopping in my head ever since. So. darn. catchy. Thank you Miss Jill Andrews. I don't have a great vid of that track to share, but this one is just as good.
Then, you realize you are 5'nothing and they might be bigger...and yell back at you. Because if they don't care that they almost ran you down, they probably don't care to pounce on you if you fight back.

Errr....so now I am enjoying an ice cold brewsky. And it's not Lone Star - I can't do Texas beer in this state of mind.

But, this made me realize that my beloved slice of Texas heaven has its drawbacks. Well, really, just one - TERRIBLE DRIVERS. And when I say terrible, I mean worse than anyone you could imagine at this moment, believe me.

When will the beer kick in?S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-52150890524566860932009-04-06T19:33:00.002-05:002009-04-06T19:35:49.031-05:00Does that make me Crazy?Yes, possibly. Today I have spent too many hours staring at a screen, working, playing, and getting into all sorts of trouble in this crazy tech world we live in today. I posted a Blog entry over on my MySpace account, replicated that over here for all my non-MySpace buds & fam, attempted to create an event in Facebook (boo) and finally gave in to the latest craze....Twitter.

Please forgive me...S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-5501716986045242912009-04-06T14:57:00.000-05:002009-04-06T14:58:06.258-05:00Austin and the road to Ol' Wyom It's been 6 months since I walked into this crazy music town of Austin, Texas with wide eyes and uneasy hope. I say uneasy because I had no clue what to expect, good or bad.

Well, it's been very, very good, to say the least. I have met some of the most talented, kind hearted musicians you could imagine. I also managed to meet quite a few non-musician folks who are equally sweet and helped me in too many ways to count.

While in Austin, I was able to: jam with great players, play shows at some amazing venues, record a demo with one of Austin's best guitarists, write enough new material for a few albums, learn about Texas pork tacos and queso, see 3 of my heroes for the first time in concert (Lucinda Williams, Ryan Adams & Ray LaMontagne), experience my first SXSW (crazy), spend too much time and too much money in Whole Foods, enjoy movies at the Alamo with full service beer and food (it should never be any other way I've decided), open my ears to many wonderful Austin bands and acts, and so on and so on.

I leave in one week to head back to Wyoming for the summer. I won't deny that I am a little sad. Austin has been a true home to me in every way possible. But, I look forward to seeing those old friends back in Wyoming and getting away from the Texas summers I have been hearing so much about. There are exciting shows in Jackson (solo and with Screen Door Porch), so look me up if you ever feel like seeing some Rocky Mountain wide open spaces.

And, I'll be back Austin....in just a few months time.S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-8970222430877669572009-03-17T23:03:00.003-05:002009-03-17T23:16:34.705-05:00The NEW March MadnessAs many of you already know, the mayhem that is known as SXSW has hit Austin this week. The interactive and film parts of the festival began last week and the music "technically" starts tomorrow. This will be my first time experiencing the festival, and I must say I am giddy and anxious for what is to come. In all my festival days, I have never been to anything of this mass or proportion (redundant?, perhaps). Crazy doesn't begin to explain it.

Tomorrow begins some day party madness for me. I am super excited about some of the acts I am planning (and crossing my fingers that I will get) to see! I will try to update the blog with pics and such from shows....On tomorrow's list of hopefuls:

- A much buzzed about Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers - fronted by a great young singer/songwriter from OK.
- Elvis Perkins in Dearland - great new album...should be awesome
- Heartless Bastards - no, not the ones with James McMurtry - I was fooled at first as well. But, this would be the Ohio Heartless Bastards with some rocking grooves.
- M. Ward - AHHH! yeah, that pretty much describes it.

Oh, and forget NCAA brackets for me this year...SXSW has me way too hyped up to think about BBall. But, of course, I have to give a shout to my Tigers! PS, Clemson - let's make it a little longer than the recent ACC tourney, k?S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-84804371008790743002009-03-13T01:34:00.003-05:002009-03-13T01:45:45.619-05:00They Call it HomeI've been wondering lately (a little too intensely) about the concept of home and our "localities." Having moved around quite a bit in the last 5/6 years, home has generally just evolved with me. But, if anyone asks "So, whereabouts you from," I will immediately answer "North Carolina." But, I wonder if that's true anymore?

The real answer to that question is not so easy. Yeah, I'm from NC, but I spent a good 4 years in South Carolina, then another 4 in Wyoming, before making my way to Austin, TX about 6 months ago. That makes me feel like a very mixed up mutt. In between all the moving around, I lost a good portion of that Southern twang, picked up a good bit of Western know-it-all and now slosh around even better Texas twang.

I've noticed in each area I move to, there is huge, I mean huge, pride in being a "local" and even more in "born, raised, stayed." In every area, it's exactly the same. And don't you dare call yourself a local around one of them...that's just cause for a fight. But, wait, I can't call myself a local in NC (b/c I haven't lived there in 8 years or so), or Wyoming (even though I OWN a place there), or in Texas (b/c I just haven't been here LONG enough). So where do I fit in?

Nowhere you say? Yeah, exactly. Hmm, maybe home is "where the heart is." Oh wait, that just made me puke in my mouth a bit. Nope, home has to be much simpler than that. It's got to be that place that takes my money every month for a dry square of land.

And local pride? Well, okay, if you were lucky enough to be born, raised and choose to live (for all your life - those are the luckiest) in let's say, Poodunc, USA town, well okay I'll let that slide. Because, damn you sure are lucky to never have lived in any other amazing places just the US has to offer. But, I digress....S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-14321735039979034222009-03-10T19:26:00.003-05:002009-03-10T19:42:07.541-05:00Oh, a Blog, what's that?I apologize for being extremely lazy with blog posts lately. I don't have any good reasons either. The news is slow, the pickin's good and the weather has been pretty fab recently. Okay, maybe a few reasons...

This weekend I was able to catch some amazing Austin shows, a good warm up for what's about to hit me full force in just a week's time (SXSW!). The boyfriend was in town and on Friday night we caught the Belleville Outfit at Momo's. These kids (yeah, I can call them that b/c I'm not so sure they are even old enough to drink, which makes them much younger than I) are killing it and deliver a great mix of original harmony driven cajun-swing-jazz-and everything else. Definitely music you can shake to.

Last night we headed over to the Saxon Pub to see Bob Schneider's Lonelyland. I don't want to admit it, but it was my first time seeing Bob (in Austin, that's a bit of a bad thing!). Of course, he and the rest of the band were completely phenomenal. Bob is classic Austin. A dash of arrogance, great songwriting, lots of words one would not say around one's mother, and a lot of beer swishing fun. Every song felt like a new concert experience - it was great. The man is worth the hype and I will be making it out to many more shows!S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-78264858370718381272009-02-06T22:27:00.005-06:002009-02-06T23:04:26.821-06:00Thoughts on RejectionBuckle up, this one's gonna be a rambler...

I hate rejection. I suppose we all do. Any kind mostly sucks... friends, jobs, lovers, even strangers! As a musician, rejection is going to be staring me in the face for the rest of my days. Or however long I decide to pursue things in this musical world. Yeah, that really sucks.

A few years ago, when I first really dipped into the performance level of music, rejection was my biggest nightmare. I constantly worried that no one would like me, my style, my songs. And that made things so much worse on stage. I felt I HAD to be perfect and I NEVER was. I wanted everyone to be my biggest fan. Ha, the idea now makes me chuckle. But, it was a very good lesson. And one that has taken me years to learn.

So, finally (FINALLY!!) this week my lesson in rejection came to an end. In the past 4 months, I have been given some wonderful opportunities in the Austin music scene and am SO thankful for all of those. NOT ONCE have I felt rejected here. Funny huh...you would think it would lie around waiting for every musician to capture. But it's not what this town is about. Austin is about chances and the people that are here to take theirs.

This is the lesson: Rejection only comes to those who anticipate it. Sure, people say no, but it just means your knocking on the wrong door. Or, you've been visiting the wrong "house" for way too long.

So I say F' it. I no longer want to hear the word, I no longer want to feel it. And I most certainly no longer want to feel less worthy because of it. Music is the path I've chosen, so yes, I will be growing some thicker skin, but that other part? It's no longer part of the equation. Tell it to go knock on someone else's door (okay, hopefully not yours). ;)S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-42753876102204784392009-01-22T18:51:00.005-06:002009-01-22T19:03:43.384-06:00NEW NekoAhh. The blog entry has since been removed, so I think it may have been a quickie rant at the state of things. But, who knows??

Anyhow, after reading the entry there was one part in particular that struck a chord with me. I wanted to share a bit of that and say - "hell ya, don't let'm bring ya down." Some good stuff...

"never become that if you choose this path- if you go this route with your art. never listen to those loud dissatisfied bystanders who only want to see you fail because that will be entertaining for that moment. hold fast to your dreams, hold faster to your heart and never step out of the light of that love that made you whole. i did. and i know better now. and better late than never i suppose." - Ryan Adams

If Ryan is actually quitting music, then so be it - whatever makes you happy, that's what you have to follow. If not, I'll be standing in line for the next album and tour :).S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-41373754176274520372009-01-16T17:09:00.002-06:002009-01-16T17:12:36.042-06:00JH Gondola Concert...From the 2008 Jackson Hole Music Festival...The Avett Brothers with "St. Joseph's" on the JH Gondola. Yes, it's that funny.

I have a new piece of advise for an easy ego boost for any of my fellow musicians out there: watch the American Idol audition special. Holy crap! Do those people even THINK they can sing? I guess one could be nervous and screw things up a bit (I do know ALL about that - hello 5th grade solo), but really....

I just had to post an entry on that. Of course, this will be the last episode of that shit-tastic show that I watch this season b/c it's the only one worth watching. On February 17, M. Ward will release "Hold Time" - his new album that ties that all too familiar haunting voice with lulling rhythms and fantastic songwriting. It's funny how his voice makes one hurt so much and feel right at home, all at the same time. Hmm, maybe hurt and home go hand in hand??

Here's the new video for Hold Time...
S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-82815847630466176392009-01-10T19:31:00.005-06:002009-01-10T19:53:10.404-06:00Studio InspirationI know we are just 10 days into 2009, but there are already some new tunes stirring around in my head. Some of mine, some of others. I hit the studio this Thursday (ahh!) to record some songs for a demo and I have had studio inspiration on my mind ALL day. I wanted to let you guys in on some new music that you can't miss out on for 2009. And, it seems that many of my favorite bands are hitting the studio this spring (Avett Bros, Grace & the Nocturnals, Drive by Truckers, etc.), which means some great music is definitely on the way people!

The first album you should own for 2009....
Derek Trucks Band - Already Free. Release date January 13, 2009
I am dancing in my chair as I write this, listening to some of the new tracks on this album. Fantastic. As a fan of these boys for years I had recently wondered, how does a band this talented get any better? Their reply: Already Free.
Choice track of the moment: "Don't Miss Me"

I couldn't find a live version of Don't Miss Me, but here's another live tune from the album, Sweet Inspiration. Also, if you want to learn more about Already Free, there is a great video on the making of the album at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkdaCCUH2do.

S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-15517590046585784302009-01-03T11:19:00.005-06:002009-01-03T11:26:15.133-06:00Resolutions?In past years, I haven't been on the wagon of creating resolutions for the year. Why? I just figured they would be a bunch of things I wouldn't accomplish...and it was too hard to focus on a few goals! I am starting 2009 in a different way...finally creating my New Year's Resolutions. My mom seems to think that 14 is the magic number here, but I couldn't come up with quite that many. Here's a peak at mine...

1. Travel more
2. After a much needed and enjoyable vacay in North Carolina, I am back in Austin and back in gear.

Over the last few weeks, I have read many top lists of 08. I figured I needed one as well, but this one's a bit different...it's my combination of everything great, in my top 8 of Oh-Eight. Some of these will come as no surprise, but some...well, just may!

8. Twilight...the book.
Favorite Guilty Pleasure of 08
I thought I was too old to enjoy Vampire high school love stories, but alas I was very, very wrong. The first in a 4 part series, this story was so good and addicting that I couldn't put it down and finished in 2 days. I will be visiting the book store today to purchase the rest of the series. FYI, the book was not published in 08, but the new movie was released in 08, giving even more attention to the series. Haven't seen the flick yet, but it looks pretty yummy as well.

7. Tina Fey...and all her personalities
Favorite entertainer of 08
I have been a Tina fan for quite some time, but this year was epic for her. 30 Rock continues to crack me up and her impersonations of Sarah Palin on SNL were so funny I thought I was going to pee myself. Oh wait, she didn't even have to...

6. The Dark Knight
Favorite movie of 08
Movies are very important to me...I love any stories, romantic, funny, dark, depressing. This was an easy choice for me for my favorite flick of 08. The whole country was antsy at seeing Heath Ledger's last performance, and it did not disappoint. But, Heath was not the only stand out in The Dark Knight...kudos also belong to Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Aaron Eckhart...and the list goes on.

5. Momo's, Austin TX
Favorite live music venue
Over the past few months I have found many places that I adore in Austin, but this one in particular has crept up to the top of my list. A great club to catch local songwriters, bands and the occasional touring show, Momo's has those atmosphere we all long for to see live music...a place to dance out of the way, quieter areas to watch music and an open deck for the outdoor lovers. If you check out Austin, this is a place worth visiting.

4. The Second Gleam - The Avett Brothers
Favorite album of 08
And the most influential album for me. Simple, emotionally raw songs and writing that is unbelievably honest. One of the longest, most rocking events of my life. Added bonus: meeting Jeff Tweedy in the parking lot. Minus bonus: the boyfriend almost blinding him with the camera. Nevermind what others on the web are saying, this the band is the most rocking live act right now (okay according to me).

2. Hillary Clinton
Favorite female of 08
The original underdog...Ms. Clinton braved a tough field in the 08 election. No one seems to want to give her credit, they would rather talk about her being a bitch or fighting for what she wants. News flash folks: politics ain't nice, especially when you are one of the few women on the field. I'm very proud of this lady - and look forward to what she brings to the table as the new Secretary of State.

1. Jackson Hole Music Festival
Favorite New tradition of 08
Finally! After years of speculation, Festival Network managed to create the kind of festival only imaginable in Jackson Hole, with some of the hottest live acts in the biz right now (including Wilco & The Avett Brothers). With local "tweeners" in between touring acts, a watering hole, reusable wares, local goods and so much more, the 1st annual festival kicked off in a major way...can't wait to see who plays in 09.

Below: Clip from JH Music Fest - The Black Crowes.
S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-3674128916384083832008-12-10T23:37:00.003-06:002008-12-10T23:57:22.899-06:00Ahhh...the sound is driving me bonkersI just finished a very productive day of: guitar playing, songwriting, watching multiple episodes of old 90210, a little work, a little socializing, etc. etc. Yep, it's such a crazy life I lead. The bummer of the day is that the high in Austin was MAYBE 50 degrees...boo. Oh, and there is this strange hissing noise outside my apartment that started a few hours ago and won't stop. So I need to complain a bit about that to make myself feel better, b/c sleep is obviously many more hours away. Double boo.

In good news...I just made some real plans to get into the studio in early January to lay down some demo tunes. Now, don't go gittin your britches in a knot...we're talkin 3 - 4 of my songs, so no S. Rose full-length record yet! I'm going to be working with Rich Brotherton (of Robert Earl Keen), and I am super excited about that. And a little intimidated as well, but it should be fabulous.

I take off for the hills of North Carolina in less than 1 week for the holiday festivities. Oh, birthday festivities too and if anyone asks, I am turning 26 (part deux). Since so so many of my blog posts (okay ALL) have to do with music I thought I would add one of my favorite songs about where I come from...so I will leave you with this. For good measure, I'm not telling you who or what the song is - so you better watch to find out.

"may you one day carry me home..."

S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-43118758110950064482008-12-07T21:15:00.003-06:002008-12-07T21:36:24.831-06:00Our love is like our music...It's here, and then it's goneI have been one crazy chicken lately...in such a good way. This past week I worked a lot (and actually the paying kind), played a lot and even had a gig thrown in. My fingers are killing me from the overload of music. And, I have been listening to lots & lots of tunes- for inspiration, cover possibilities and some friendly recommendations. The two most influential tracks of the week -
1. No Expectations - Rolling Stones. Watch below...starts around 3:07...

2. Boom Boom - John Lee Hooker. Trying to learn this one now...damn that boy knew the blues...

Enjoy these Sunday treats. This week is another highly packed one for me...trying to get into a studio to lay some new tracks down and play my little heart out. I will try and keep you updated!S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-27420377361684611382008-11-30T22:35:00.005-06:002008-11-30T22:51:52.671-06:00Ah, Yes, Thanks...Thanksgiving is one of those weird holidays for me. I'm always not quite recovered from the horrors of Halloween, and Christmas is so close you can almost taste snowflakes in your mouth. Oh wait, I live in Texas now...I'm sure it's snowed here before...anyhow...I do love the idea of lots of yummy yummy food and football. It may not be my favorite holiday, but it's quickly growing on the list.

Every Thanksgiving is a bit different for me. For many years I have spent it with an "adopted" family of friends. Last year I was lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving with my guy and both our families. This year, no families, but the guy was in Austin to celebrate. We had a great time cooking a wee bit and digesting lots of food with our new "adopted" family in Austin. A few days later I am still in a food coma with a Budha belly, but I just remembered that I forgot to even Thank anyone on Thanksgiving. So, I must make up for that. But, I'll keep this short...

For starters, you, the one reading this blog. It's nice to know someone actually wants to keep up with me. Kudos to you ;).

The fam - mine, Aaron's and anyone who is in the "adopted" network.

The friends - NC, SC, Jackson, Austin and everywhere in between (okay you all live in way too many places for me to post).

And the dog - Harper, you're still in the fam, but you deserve an extra shout out b/c I want you to remember who's your favorite when I get back to Jackson.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving - full of food, family, friends, and don't forget, Thanks!S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-63198257604324939092008-11-20T22:17:00.005-06:002008-11-20T22:29:29.303-06:00A Taste of Austin Blues with Seth WalkerAbout a week ago Aaron and I caught an interesting show at the Parish in downtown Austin. I had discovered that Seth Walker was playing a free show that night and decided that we HAD to go. Seth is a local blues/cajun/soul musician and the buzz has been brewing around him for some time. The event wasn't quite a full-fledged concert, and we found ourselves in the midst of an "awareness" night...very innneresting. When Seth finally hit the stage I thought "this guy better be awesome, because this is the weirdest setting ever and I am ready to bolt for the door." Thank goodness, he was indeed awesome...and more! I was impressed with his soulful voice and his mix of raw blues and Ray Charlesy ballads. That boy knows some blues, that's for sure. And, with the emotion he puts into his performance, I would bet he's lived through some blues as well.S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6508556760958068382.post-77708754172048769392008-11-08T18:15:00.004-06:002008-11-11T15:33:54.388-06:00Infuences these daysI started a very lazy Saturday morning by learning a few new tunes and writing some new ones for myself. 6 hours later I decided maybe I should shower, eat, and get myself the hell outta dodge. All in all, it's been a productive day, and probably even more so when I go out on the town tonight. But, at the end of all of this I started to think about what I am writing these days and what my influences are right now. So, I am posting my top ten influences of the month (they could easily change each week, but we don't need to go through that!!). Really, the top 2 in this category are: the city, and home. But, I am limiting this to albums...so in no particular order b/c I can't face trying that...

Jacksonsville City Nights - Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
home, longing, love...what more do you need to sustain on? I could probably put ALL of Ryan's albums on this list, but this is my most listened to in recent terms.
Choice Track: "Trains"

Another Country - Tift Merritt
There are many songs on this album that continually break my heart. Her first album, and my personal favorite - always.
Choice Track: "Finest Lovin' Man"

Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs - Derek & The Dominos
Whenever I really need to feel inspired I listen to this album. It has such a power over me. And no, Mr. Clapton is not, in fact, my favorite guitar player on this album (for those of you who know a bit about the Dominos). Even though I do love me some Eric Clapton...
Choice Track: "Bell Bottom Blues"

Acid Tongue - Jenny Lewis
I have just delved into this album, and it's so worth it. Jenny Lewis is one of my favorite songwriters right now and I love the honesty, sex and rawness she puts into her work (frontwoman of Rilo Kiley).
Choice Track: "Pretty Bird"

Gleam II - The Avett Brothers
This is a 6 song EP, with just the two Avetts and their stringed instruments. To listen to it in its entirety is just a bit much (I think it's the "divorce" album), but in parts it's pretty unbelievable.
Choice Track: "You Can Bring Me Flowers"

The West Was Burning - Martha Scanlan
Okay, another one of my favorite songwriters, in a slightly more country direction. So, then of course I found myself on a mission to find the hidden female gems that aren't getting the coverage they so deserve. And, being in Austin it's only fitting that one of the gals that crept up to the top of this list is Austinite Suzanna Choffel.

From her own bio, Suzanna describes her sound as "the time right before a storm hits...the smell of rain, pressure in the air, warm breezes, electrical skin tingling...sexy"..and I couldn't agree more. There's a fun bubbly presence in her music, with blends of ambient rawness. I'm a new fan and can't wait to catch a live show in Austin.S.Rosehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04387896106589333551noreply@blogger.com0
